For Immediate Release: March 10, 2024
Following a strike vote with record turnout, which was overwhelmingly in favour of a strike, LUMUN had set a strike deadline of midnight Sunday night (March 10 2024). LUMUN’s bargaining team met with the University late into the night Sunday in an attempt to avoid disruption to students and have managed to negotiate a tentative deal with the employer.
Details of the agreement cannot be released publicly or to the media by either party unless ratified by the Union’s membership.
“The next step will be to consult with our membership on the deal,” says Alison Coffin of LUMUN. “We are so grateful for the support we have received from students and from faculty, other unions, and the community at large. Our rally this past week in support of LUMUN, which was attended by representatives of the Memorial Students’ Union (MUNSU), Faculty Association (MUNFA), CUPE 1615, NAPE, and Canadian Federation of Students (CFS-NL) among many others, was heartwarming.”
LUMUN will be holding a membership meeting soon to discuss the tentative agreement and members have been informed by email of the situation. They are encouraged to stay tuned by email for next steps regarding consultation on the tentative deal.
